Silicon is a silvery, non-metallic element which makes up 25% of the earth's crust. It is not a synthetic material, it readily combines with oxygen so it is rarely found pure in nature. It is commonly seen as sand or quartz (silicon + oxygen). The pure silicon necessary for computer chips is obtained only as a result of a hi-tech refining process.
